Mr. Abdul Khayum Khan is an IPS Officer of 1981 batch. He is a Post Graduate in Chemistry(Gold Medalist) and worked for his Ph.D. at Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), Hyderabad. He is the son of Late Sri Abdul Kareem Khan, an IAS Officer who served in several positions in the Government including as Chairman of Minorities Commission.
After his initial stint as S.P in various district like East Godavari, Krishna, Nalgonda, Prakasam, the worked as DIG & IG in rural districts subsequently he worked as Additional Commissioner(2002-08), Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad from 2009-12. He served as Managing director of the biggest Public Road Transport Corporation, APSRTC in the world and turned round its fortunes besides drastically improving the services. He also served as Addl. Director General (Law & Order) of the State before getting elevated as DGP in 2012 and he worked in the rank of DGP, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana until his retirement in December’2016. The government of Telangana decided to utilize services considering his vast experience in diverse fields and appointed him as Adviser in Cabinet rank for 3 years.
He is a recipient of Indian Police Medal (IPM) and President Police Medal (PPM) for distinguished meritorious services besides earning several awards. He widely traveled to countries like UK, USA, France, Switzerland, Austria, Singapore, Korea, Japan, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, UAE, Sweden etc., on several occasions on professional programs and as part of Government of India delegations.
His interest extends to sports and games. Besides being a keen Tennis & Cricket player, he served as President of AP Football Association, Vice President of Hyderabad Hockey Association and Vice President of Andhra Cricket Association. He has authored two books and was editor of Police Professional Magazines for over two decades. He is a Director on the board of Centre For Organization Development (COD), a prestigious All-India Management Centre supported by the Government and major corporates.
He is honorary Director of Centre for government services at Moulana Azad University (supported by UGC). He is an Executive Committee Member of Hyderabad Study Circle, who has turned out hundreds of IAS, IPS, IFS and Central Service Officers (through the Civil Services Exams of UPSC) over the last 3 decades.
In addition to his professional work, at present, the Telangana State Government is utilizing his services to envisage and execute Minority Educational, Welfare, Skill-Development and Financial Assistance programs. Noteworthy among them is the education project to set up 202 high-quality Minority Residential English medium schools to benefit 1,28,640 boys and girls from economically deprived strata from the minority communities. The total outlay of the project runs to Rs.7000 crores. 71 of these schools turned functional during this academic year (2016-17). Another 131 Schools will commence in June’2017 Mr. A.K. Khan is the President of the Autonomous society created for the purpose.
At present, he is also engaged in developing entrepreneurship programs or the Minority Youth in the fields of manufacturing and service sector. Several Skill Development programs for the youth are also anchored under his stewardship.
His responsibilities include overseeing the functioning of Wakf board, Urdu Academy, Minority Finance Corporation, Dairatul Maarif Osmania University, Centre for Education Development of Minorities, etc.,
